A new home made of an old-time material is turning heads at Mt Duneed.
Tristan and Hollie O’Reilly reveal in the new edition of Geelong Coast (GC) magazine that they spent two years building their straw-bale “labour of love”.
Tristan tells GC that the home is both sustainable and “healthy”.
“Straw buildings have been around for hundreds if not thousands of years – it’s a little more common than most people realise,” Tristan says.
“It takes its heating from the sun and having correct shading keeps it cool in the summer.”
“You’ve got 45-50mm earth render barrier on the inside and a lime and sand render outside before you reach the straw.
“It’s definitely worth it – it really is a fantastic, healthy home to live in.
“We gave a lot of thought to the orientation of the house and the materials used. It pretty much stays comfortable all year around.”
